Tasmania from north to south.
One thing we have noticed is that Australians like art in everyday life. In part, we have often been amused by their very creative mailboxes, out in the more rural surroundings. It has been in the form of creative painting, or tuned lawn mowers, garden tractors, submarines, shark yawns, crash helmets or something else.
But also in the form of more traditional works of art and sculptures. In Sheffield they have chosen the mural as their art form. A quiet walk around the city center is like being in a gallery. Here we appreciate infinitely that Australia has very few vandals who destroy other people's works and property. What a fantastic difference from Europe.
Cataract Gorge Reserve, is a small gorge where it is popular to cool off in the river - possibly also just in the swimming pool next to it.
We were a little surprised by how steep the streets are in the city - it presented a bit of a challenge. Not so to understand that it is struggling with traction, more the fact that our handbrake has passed away in a depressed state of mind. If anyone has seen a Toyota Land Cruiser handbrake skittering down the street - muttering "I don't want this job anymore" please speak up. We miss it very much…
Next item on the agenda, fix the handbrake.
We are on our way south and on several occasions we have stayed at River's Edge Wildernes Camping, which can be highly recommended. Nice people, cosy, magnificent nature and lots of space. We have been both when it was half empty and completely sold out to the last seat.
It pays to get up early and enjoy the sunrise and wildlife.
Cockle Creek is the southernmost point in Australia that you can drive to. There is also the option of walking 6-8 days on established hiking routes to cross over into the southern primeval forest area. We met quite a few who were doing the route.
It is rare that we feel like walking for such a long time - but here it could be tempting. Just on a 1-2 hour walk along the bay there was incredibly beautiful and dramatic nature to look at.
