Landmannalaugar and Jökulsárlón
Not too far from Hekla, lies a divinely beautiful area called Landmannalaugar. It is located in the highlands and you can only go there in the summer when the F-roads are open. The area is known for its different colored mountains and it is really photogenic.
There are both steep roads, not so good roads and smaller water crossings. So a 4 wheel drive is required.
At a water crossing, we pull over to the side and start some lunch. We are sitting and enjoying the food when a couple of frozen cyclists come driving by. When they see the water, it is certainly not with joy in their eyes.
We ask them if they can use a lift over so they don't get soaked. They don't say no to that. We pack the lunch together and help the couple across the water. There will be a few more crossings, so we'll give them a little longer lift. It arouses great joy and they can cycle on dry shoes.
It is a nice area to cycle in, but water crossings are not so pleasant when the air is 12 and the water 5 degrees. There are many good places to find shelter for the night, so we find a good spot and enjoy the sunset.
We continue along the F-roads through Landmannalaugar and drive out to the main road. From there it goes east to Jökulsárlón.
It's a fun place where Iceland's largest glacier Vatnajökull calves, so icebergs drift out into the fjord all year round.
There is a small cafeteria/ticket office if you fancy a fun ride in their amphibious vehicles. Then you can get a boat trip out between the icebergs. They love to tell about when James Bond was filmed here.
They closed off the fjord so it froze to ice and then it was possible to record a wild car chase for Die Another Day. It's beautiful how the colors change, depending on the time of day.
We stay overnight so we can take photos both at sunrise and sunset.
