Alps Southern Europe

Alpetour 2019, episode 5

Matterhorn
To round off the big mountains in the Alps, we now aimed for the Matterhorn, which most people know from the Toblerone logo. At first we tried via the Italian side, but the town we came to was clearly gearing up for winter tourism and all cable cars etc. were out of service at this time. Never mind, we're just going to Zermatt, Switzerland. With us, there is no such thing as being driven wrong - we just come up with something else.

Zermatt is a cozy mountain town, with no access to foreign motor vehicles. Electric cars of all shades buzz around the city and tourists are transported there by local taxi or train.

When you walk around the narrow streets, you understand that they have made the most logical choice with that policy. Nice old wooden houses with flower boxes, a good atmosphere and a nice view should not be disturbed by car engines.

We once again jumped on a cable car to reach the top. End station Matterhorn Glacial Paradise. Hmnn... if you've seen mountains before, the landscape left a lot to be desired. There was then a view of peaks and valleys further away. But even pensioners with crutches would be able to stroll comfortably around the plateau we ended up on. The wildest action sport exercise consisted of a small slide on an inflated swimming ring... It was quite disappointing, especially when we had Mont Blanc and its lively activity in the back of our minds.

Just to underline their tourist trap status, a soft drink costs around DKK 50. When you then need to get rid of it again, it costs DKK 15 to go to the toilet. Then you don't feel that the 660 kroner per person for the cable car is particularly well spent. Pure tourist trap - don't fall for it. The Matterhorn is still best seen from below the city, with a Wiener schnitzel on the plate in front of you.

Fortunately, they had also done a little extra to contribute to the attraction at Glacial Paradise. Tunnels were carved out of the ice that led to skilfully made ice sculptures - this lifted the mood a bit again.

After some surfing on Ekstra Bladet and BT to pass the time, we decided to float down again. There was an opportunity for food, views and sightseeing in Zermatt - it was time well spent.

Now the trip was coming to an end, we drove through beautiful alpine landscapes and were extremely satisfied with the great experiences that the whole trip has provided.

And wow, there was just one extra thing. We were guided to a car transport train by our clever GPS. You ride aboard open freight cars and then the train otherwise drones away in dark tunnels. A bit like the haunted house in Tivoli, except that you are sitting in your own car. A nice and really fun end to the trip.
